Legend & History of Konark Sun Temple

Legend has it that Samba, son of Lord Krishna was affected by leprosy, due to the curse of Lord Krishna himself. Hence, Samba performed severe penance for twelve years at Mitravana, near the confluence of Chandrabhaga River with the sea at Konark. Lord Surya, who was pleased with his penance, cured his illness. Samba, in turn, decided to build a temple to honor Lord Surya. While Samba was bathing in the Chandrabhaga River, he found an image of the God. He shaped out the body of Lord Surya by Viswakarma. The image was installed by Samba in a temple built by him in Mitravana. Since then, the place has been regarded as sacred
